DNA Dynamics · 36 statements · 5 minutesBeta

The temperament you bring to politics.

Two people can hold identical positions and still be opposite political animals. One fights, one listens. One sees threats, one sees deals. One trusts the government, the other the corner store. Dynamics measures that difference — and who gets your good faith.

What this political temperament test measures

DNA Dynamics is a political temperament test: thirty-six short statements, about five minutes, and a result that describes how you hold your politics rather than what they are. It scores four temperament dimensions and your trust in six kinds of institutions. The result needs no account. The instrument is in beta.

  • Intellectual humilityWhether your convictions are working drafts or finished conclusions.
  • Identity centralityHow much of who you are is wrapped up in politics.
  • Threat orientationWhether the world reads as basically safe, or as a place that rewards keeping your guard up.
  • Sum orientationWhen one group gains, does someone else have to lose?
  • Institutional trustHow much good faith you extend to government, big business, small business, the news media, science and universities, and charities.

Two people can hold the same positions and the same moral instincts and still be opposite political animals. One treats a view as settled and wears it like a jersey; the other holds the same view loosely and keeps it out of friendships. Dynamics measures that difference. It has no left score and no right score.

How the thirty-six statements work

Six statements measure each temperament dimension, on the five-point agree–disagree scale the rest of the suite uses, and two statements cover each institution. None of them names a policy or a party. Within each dimension, half the statements are keyed so that agreeing raises the score and half so that agreeing lowers it: agree with everything and you land in the middle, and the pattern exposes answers given on autopilot. Each dimension comes out as a 0-to-100 score in a low, middle or high band.

Unlike Origins, nothing here trades off against anything else. These are dispositions that can genuinely coexist, so each is scored on its own terms. The wording draws on established research scales for intellectual humility, partisan identity, threat sensitivity and zero-sum belief; the instrument itself is ours. The walkthrough is on how DNA Dynamics works.

What your result looks like

A temperament signature: the four scores side by side, each with a short reading of what the band means. On top of the numbers, an engagement style from how humility and identity centrality combine: the Bridge-Builder (politics central, held with an open hand), the Standard-Bearer (central and settled), the Freethinker (off to the side and open), or the Observer (off to the side and settled). Then your trust profile across the six institutions, reported as context rather than folded into the style.

How it differs from a political compass or a personality test

A political compass or quiz places you by positions; Dynamics never asks for one and cannot place you. A personality inventory describes general traits across the whole of life; these four dimensions are narrower and political by design, describing how you carry a belief into a room full of people who disagree. Zero-sum thinking is the clean example of why that matters: it turns up among people who want more redistribution and among people who want tighter borders, so it refuses to sort into one camp.

What it can and cannot claim, in beta

Dynamics is in active beta and its formal validation has not run yet. It is scheduled once enough linked results exist to check that each dimension hangs together, that the four measure different things, that no style label swallows half the population, and that the bands sit where they should. Until then the bands and the style names can move. The result is a self-report snapshot of the day you took it, not a diagnosis and not a forecast of your vote, and it makes no claim about biology. The science page covers the evidence standards the suite holds itself to.

Frequently asked questions

Is the political temperament test free?

Yes. All thirty-six statements, your four dimension scores, your engagement style and your trust profile are free and need no account. PoliticalDNA is a for-profit, independent project; the only paid products are optional Deep Readings written from your DNA Scan answers.

How long does it take?

About five minutes: thirty-six statements, one screen at a time, on a five-point scale. Your progress is kept in this browser, so you can leave and resume.

Do I need to take the DNA Scan first?

No. Dynamics stands on its own and never reads your positions. With a Scan result in this browser or on your account, the two are linked so your temperament can be read next to your archetype.

Why is it in beta?

Because the validation wave has not run. The dimensions build on established scales, but the reliability of our own items, the independence of the four dimensions and the placement of the bands are still to be confirmed on real answers.

Does it tell me whether I am left or right?

No, and it is built not to. There is no left–right score and no prediction of your positions or your archetype. That is what the DNA Scan is for.
