At MIT he earned degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering and developed technology for interacting with computers by touch, then founded SensAble Technologies, which his House biography says obtained 29 patents. In January 2012, as a first-term Lewis County judge-executive, he ran for the open House seat as a small-government Republican. Endorsed by Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee, he won the May 22 primary with about 45 percent of the vote and took office that November.\n\nIn Congress he has voted against large bills and asked members to go on record. In 2014 he demanded a roll-call vote on a Congressional Gold Medal for the golfer Jack Nicklaus, saying he \"came to Congress because there's a $17 trillion debt.\" On March 27, 2020, he objected to passing the roughly $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill by voice vote, and President Donald Trump called him a \"third rate Grandstander.\" He voted against Trump's tax-and-spending package in May and July 2025, saying it would \"significantly increase U.S. budget deficits in the near term.\" In January 2025 he reintroduced H.R. 24, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, an audit bill in the line Ron Paul began in 2009.\n\nIn June 2014 he joined Zoe Lofgren and Jim Sensenbrenner on an amendment barring warrantless searches of government databases for information about Americans; it passed the House 293 to 123 and was dropped from that December's spending package. On June 17, 2025, he and Democrat Ro Khanna introduced a resolution to bar unauthorized hostilities against Iran, stating that \"Congress has the sole power to declare war against Iran.\" After US strikes on Iran in 2026, the House rejected their war powers resolution 212 to 219 on March 5.\n\nWith Khanna he wrote the Epstein Files Transparency Act, requiring the Justice Department to release its Jeffrey Epstein records, and filed the discharge petition that brought it to the floor over Speaker Mike Johnson's opposition. The petition reached 218 signatures on November 12, 2025; the House passed the bill 427 to 1 on November 18, and Trump, whose White House had worked against the effort, signed it the next day. On October 17, 2025, Trump endorsed Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL, against Massie, and Gallrein won the May 19, 2026, primary. \"If the legislative branch always votes with the president, we do have a king,\" Massie told supporters that night. In September 2026 he opened a second discharge petition, for a bill letting survivors, members of Congress and state officials take the Justice Department to court over compliance with the 2025 law.
