These failures did not end his influence; they helped define what later critics, including Marx and Engels, would label \"utopian\" socialism—well-intentioned schemes to build model societies rather than to seize political power through class struggle.\n\nOwen's most durable political legacy lies in the movements he helped inspire rather than the communities he founded. He was a central figure in the early cooperative movement, whose ideas about mutual ownership and cooperative production shaped later organizations, and he was involved in ambitious efforts at national trade-union organization and in labor-exchange schemes intended to reward workers according to their labor rather than market prices.
