Its positive doctrine is plastic nature — an unconscious formative principle through which God works in the world, introduced to avoid the two conclusions Cudworth thought equally bad, that matter organises itself without any direction, or that God must intervene directly in every physical event.\n\nHis lasting contribution is the Treatise Concerning Eternal and Immutable Morality, published forty years after his death. It is directed against Hobbes and, behind him, the voluntarist tradition running from Ockham: the doctrine that good and evil are constituted by a command, so that what makes an act wrong is that it has been forbidden. Cudworth argues that this destroys morality rather than grounding it. If things are good only because they are willed, then the will that makes them so could equally have willed the opposite, and there is nothing left to distinguish authority from power. Moral distinctions must be eternal and immutable, holding of the natures of things as necessarily as geometrical truths, and known by the mind rather than received by obedience. Omnipotence itself cannot make cruelty good.\n\nThe argument is the ancestor of every subsequent moral realism, and the Euthyphro question that drives it — whether the good is good because it is willed, or willed because it is good — entered modern philosophy substantially through him. His pupil Shaftesbury, and through Shaftesbury Hutcheson, took the claim that moral qualities are perceived rather than commanded and turned it into the moral sense school, which is how Cudworth reaches Hume and Smith. His daughter, Damaris Masham, was a philosopher in her own right and Locke's close friend, and Locke spent his last years in her household.",1617,1688,"English","philosopher","Early Modern",null,[],[115,122],{"is_primary":116,"traditions":117},false,{"id":118,"name":119,"slug":120,"short_description":121},8,"Moral Philosophy","moral-philosophy","The discipline of reflecting systematically on ethics, virtue, and the conditions of a good life.",{"is_primary":116,"traditions":123},{"id":124,"name":125,"slug":126,"short_description":127},32,"Platonism","platonism","The philosophical tradition that takes Plato's metaphysics seriously, holding that there are eternal Forms more real than the changing physical world.",[],[130],{"relation_type":131,"traditions":132},"descends_from",{"name":133,"slug":134},"Ancient Philosophy","ancient-philosophy",[136],{"relation_type":131,"traditions":137},{"name":138,"slug":139},"Political Economy","political-economy",[141,148],{"title":142,"year":143,"year_display":144,"description":145,"kind":146,"sort_order":147},"A Treatise Concerning Eternal and Immutable Morality",1731,"written c. 1660s; published 1731","Argues against Hobbes and the voluntarists that morality cannot be constituted by any will: omnipotence itself cannot make cruelty good.","work",1,{"title":149,"year":150,"year_display":151,"description":152,"kind":146,"sort_order":153},"The True Intellectual System of the Universe",1678,"1678","An attack on atheism that states the atheist case so fully he was accused of arguing it better than he refuted it.",2,[155,159,163,167,171,175,179,183,184,188,192,196,200,204,208,212,216,220,224,228,232,236,240,244],{"name":156,"slug":157,"birth_year":158},"Confucius","confucius",-551,{"name":160,"slug":161,"birth_year":162},"Socrates","socrates",-470,{"name":164,"slug":165,"birth_year":166},"Seneca","seneca",4,{"name":168,"slug":169,"birth_year":170},"Epictetus","epictetus",50,{"name":172,"slug":173,"birth_year":174},"Peter Abelard","peter-abelard",1079,{"name":176,"slug":177,"birth_year":178},"John Duns Scotus","duns-scotus",1266,{"name":180,"slug":181,"birth_year":182},"Michel de Montaigne","michel-de-montaigne",1533,{"name":104,"slug":103,"birth_year":107},{"name":185,"slug":186,"birth_year":187},"Blaise Pascal","blaise-pascal",1623,{"name":189,"slug":190,"birth_year":191},"Francis Hutcheson","francis-hutcheson",1694,{"name":193,"slug":194,"birth_year":195},"Henry Home, Lord Kames","lord-kames",1696,{"name":197,"slug":198,"birth_year":199},"Thomas Reid","thomas-reid",1710,{"name":201,"slug":202,"birth_year":203},"Adam Smith","adam-smith",1723,{"name":205,"slug":206,"birth_year":207},"William Paley","william-paley",1743,{"name":209,"slug":210,"birth_year":211},"Dugald Stewart","dugald-stewart",1753,{"name":213,"slug":214,"birth_year":215},"Arthur Schopenhauer","arthur-schopenhauer",1788,{"name":217,"slug":218,"birth_year":219},"Henry Sidgwick","henry-sidgwick",1838,{"name":221,"slug":222,"birth_year":223},"Charles Sanders Peirce","charles-peirce",1839,{"name":225,"slug":226,"birth_year":227},"Bertrand Russell","bertrand-russell",1872,{"name":229,"slug":230,"birth_year":231},"Reinhold Niebuhr","reinhold-niebuhr",1892,{"name":233,"slug":234,"birth_year":235},"Peter Singer","peter-singer",1946,{"name":237,"slug":238,"birth_year":239},"Jonathan Haidt","jonathan-haidt",1963,{"name":241,"slug":242,"birth_year":243},"Nick Bostrom","nick-bostrom",1973,{"name":245,"slug":246,"birth_year":247},"Eliezer Yudkowsky","eliezer-yudkowsky",1979,{"cards":249,"influenced":250,"shapedBy":255,"outbound":147},[],[251,252],{"slug":190,"name":189},{"slug":253,"name":254},"thomas-hobbes","Thomas Hobbes",[]]
