Born Saloth Sar to a prosperous farming family, he was radicalized in Paris in the 1950s before returning to lead the Cambodian communist insurgency.

After the Khmer Rouge seized power in 1975, they evacuated cities, abolished money, and attempted to create an agrarian utopia they called 'Year Zero.' The result was catastrophe. Approximately 1.5-2 million people—a quarter of Cambodia's population—died from execution, starvation, disease, and forced labor.

The regime targeted intellectuals, ethnic minorities, religious groups, and anyone suspected of opposition. The Killing Fields became synonymous with mass murder. Vietnam's 1979 invasion ended the regime, but Pol Pot remained active until captured by his own movement in 1997. He died under house arrest in 1998, never facing international justice. His legacy haunts Cambodia.","/images/figures/webp/polpot.webp",true,5,false,"2026-05-04T19:18:37.125364+00:00","2026-07-09T03:53:28.859388+00:00","'-2':119C '1.5':118C '1950s':80C '1975':96C '1979':159C '1997':176C '1998':183C '20th':33B,63C 'abolish':100C 'activ':168C 'agrarian':16B,53C,107C 'anyon':145C 'approxim':117C 'arrest':181C 'attempt':103C 'becam':152C 'born':65C 'call':110C 'cambodia':10B,125C,191C 'cambodian':48C,86C 'captur':170C 'catastroph':116C 'caus':55C 'centuri':34B,64C 'citi':99C 'communist':7B,49C,87C 'countri':26B 'creat':105C 'die':128C,178C 'diseas':132C 'end':161C 'ethnic':140C 'evacu':98C 'execut':130C 'face':185C 'famili':72C 'farm':71C 'field':151C 'forc':134C 'genocid':37B,60C 'group':143C 'haunt':190C 'hous':180C 'insurg':88C 'intellectu':139C 'intern':186C 'invas':160C 'justic':187C 'khmer':12B,45C,91C 'kill':20B,150C 'labor':135C 'lead':84C 'leader':8B,42C 'legaci':189C 'mass':155C 'million':120C 'minor':141C 'money':101C 'movement':50C,174C 'murder':156C 'never':184C 'one':30B,56C 'opposit':148C 'pari':77C 'peopl':121C 'pol':1A,3B,38C,165C 'popul':28B,127C 'pot':2A,4B,39C,166C 'power':94C 'prosper':70C 'quarter':23B,123C 'radic':15B,52C,75C 'regim':137C,163C 'religi':142C 'remain':167C 'result':114C 'return':82C 'revolut':19B,54C 'roug':13B,46C,92C 'rough':21B 'saloth':66C 'sar':67C 'seiz':93C 'starvat':131C 'suspect':146C 'synonym':153C 'target':138C 'utopia':108C 'vietnam':157C 'whose':14B,51C 'worst':36B,59C 'year':17B,111C 'zero':18B,112C","politician",[],[122,125,127
To keep you is no benefit, to destroy you is no loss.","Khmer Rouge slogan
He who protests is an enemy; he who opposes is a corpse.
I came to carry out the struggle, not to kill people.","Interview, 1997",[131,133,135
Communist who targeted communists as enemies
Nationalist who destroyed Cambodian culture
Revolutionary who claimed he killed no one directly",0,3,75,[141
6,"As Khmer Rouge leader he imposed vanguard agrarian communism through forced collectivization and mass killing — the authoritarian-left model taken to a genocidal extreme.",[145
11,"Marxism","marxism","The intellectual and political tradition founded by Karl Marx, taking his analysis of capitalism, class, and historical change as a starting point."]
