Identified as its author, he never held a proper post again, and lived on his wife's share of a porcelain factory until it failed.\n\nThe Essence of Christianity of 1841 is the book that detonated. Its thesis is that theology is anthropology misread. The attributes ascribed to God — infinite love, perfect knowledge, unlimited will — are the predicates of human nature in the species, abstracted from the limits of any individual and projected outward as an independent being. Religion is therefore not a lie but the earliest form of humanity's self-knowledge, in which we encounter our own essence as though it were another's. The cost is that the projection impoverishes what it comes from: to enrich God, man must become poor. The remedy is not to abolish religion but to recognise it, converting the love of God into love of the human, and theology into anthropology.\n\nThe method beneath this is what mattered to his contemporaries. Hegel had made the material world the self-externalisation of Spirit; Feuerbach turned the relation the other way up. Thought does not produce being, being produces thought; the real subject is the sensuous, embodied, needy human being, and philosophy must start from him. Speculative philosophy, he wrote, is rational mysticism, and its inversions can be corrected simply by making the predicate the subject.\n\nEngels recorded the effect: enthusiasm was general, and we all became at once Feuerbachians. Marx took the transformative method and applied it to political economy and the state, then broke with him in the Theses on Feuerbach of 1845 — objecting that Feuerbach's human being is an abstraction rather than an ensemble of social relations, that his materialism is contemplative rather than practical, and that dissolving religion into its earthly basis leaves the question of why the earthly basis produces the illusion. The eleventh thesis, that philosophers have only interpreted the world while the point is to change it, is aimed squarely at him.\n\nWithout Feuerbach the route from Hegel to Marx has no middle term, which is the reason he is remembered at all.",1804,1872,"German","philosopher","19th Century",null,[],[115,122,128],{"is_primary":116,"traditions":117},false,{"id":118,"name":119,"slug":120,"short_description":121},50,"Dialectical Philosophy","dialectical-philosophy","The philosophical tradition that understands reality and thought as developing through contradiction and resolution rather than through static categories.",{"is_primary":116,"traditions":123},{"id":124,"name":125,"slug":126,"short_description":127},49,"German Idealism","german-idealism","The early 19th century philosophical tradition centered in Germany, focused on the relationship between mind and reality, the nature of self-consciousness, and the conditions of freedom.",{"is_primary":116,"traditions":129},{"id":130,"name":131,"slug":132,"short_description":133},38,"Materialism","materialism","The philosophical view that everything that exists is ultimately physical matter in motion, with no separate spiritual or immaterial realm.",[135,138],{"source_tradition_id":130,"target_tradition_id":118,"relation_type":136,"description":137},"descends_from","Engels and Lenin kept Hegel's account of history moving by contradiction and replaced its subject with material conditions — the inversion that made dialectic a doctrine of production rather than spirit.",{"source_tradition_id":118,"target_tradition_id":124,"relation_type":136,"description":139},"Hegel's determinate negation and Aufhebung are the method, and everything later called dialectical works from or against them.",[141],{"relation_type":136,"traditions":142},{"name":125,"slug":126},[144,148],{"relation_type":136,"traditions":145},{"name":146,"slug":147},"Marxism","marxism",{"relation_type":136,"traditions":149},{"name":131,"slug":132},[151,158],{"title":152,"year":153,"year_display":154,"description":155,"kind":156,"sort_order":157},"The Essence of Christianity",1841,"1841","God is human nature in the species, abstracted from individual limits and projected outward; theology is anthropology misread.","work",1,{"title":159,"year":160,"year_display":161,"description":162,"kind":156,"sort_order":163},"Principles of the Philosophy of the Future",1843,"1843","Being produces thought, not the reverse; speculative philosophy is rational mysticism, corrected by making the predicate the subject.",2,[165,169,170],{"name":166,"slug":167,"birth_year":168},"G.W.F.
