The family's intellectual culture was literary, radical, internationalist, and deeply shaped by the Indian connection — Edward John Thompson was one of the English intellectuals who took Indian independence seriously and wrote about it sympathetically at a time when most of the British public could not imagine it. His older brother Frank absorbed this formation fully: Frank Thompson joined the Communist Party at Oxford, served with the Special Operations Executive in Yugoslavia and Bulgaria during the war, and was captured and shot by Bulgarian collaborators in 1944. He was twenty-three. The older brother's death in an anti-fascist cause shaped E.P. Thompson's moral landscape for the rest of his life and gave his socialism a personal gravity that purely intellectual conversion could not have supplied.\n\nThompson read history at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, graduating in 1946 after the war had interrupted his studies. The Cambridge of that period, like most British universities in the late 1940s, was saturated with the political arguments produced by the war and its aftermath: Communism and anti-Communism, the Labour government's welfare state, the beginning of the Cold War. Thompson joined the Communist Party of Great Britain as an undergraduate, as many of the most intellectually serious students of his generation did, and maintained his membership through the early 1950s. He went to adult education, teaching for the Workers' Educational Association and then at the University of Leeds, where he spent many years working with students who were in employment during the day and taking evening classes by necessity. This positioning — teaching history to working-class students for whom education was not an inherited expectation but a hard-won opportunity — shaped his understanding of what historical scholarship was for in ways that a standard academic career could not have.\n\nThe Making of the English Working Class (1963) was twelve years in the writing and transformed several disciplines simultaneously. Its opening sentence announced its scope and its method: \"I am seeking to rescue the poor stockinger, the Luddite cropper, the 'obsolete' hand-loom weaver, the 'utopian' artisan, and even the deluded follower of Joanna Southcott, from the enormous condescension of posterity.\" The condescension came from multiple directions — from Whig historians who saw the working class as an obstacle to progress, from Marxist historians who saw it as a category produced by economic forces rather than a subject that made itself, and from contemporary social scientists who treated it as a dependent variable in structural models. Thompson's argument was that the English working class had made itself through cultural and political as well as economic processes — through the Methodists and the Luddites and the London Corresponding Society, through the moral economies of traditional communities and the radical politics of Paine and Cobbett — and that understanding it required taking seriously the beliefs, values, and moral commitments of the people involved rather than treating them as epiphenomena of their material situation.\n\nThe crisis of 1956 — Khrushchev's revelations about Stalin's crimes, the Soviet invasion of Hungary — produced the same mass exodus from the CPGB that it produced from Communist parties across Western Europe. Thompson was among those who left, and the intellectual work of leaving — the effort to disentangle the genuine socialist tradition from the Stalinist corruption of it — organized his subsequent career. With John Saville he founded The New Reasoner, and eventually the New Left Review, attempting to construct a socialism that was humanist, democratic, and rooted in the actual experiences and traditions of working people rather than in the abstract guarantees of historical materialism. His later theoretical essays — particularly The Poverty of Theory (1978), his polemical attack on Louis Althusser's structural Marxism — were the negative expression of this project: arguments for human agency and historical particularity against the theoreticism that was draining the blood from socialist analysis.\n\nWhigs and Hunters (1975), his study of 18th century law and the Black Acts, was the book in which he made his most controversial concession to the liberal tradition: an acknowledgment that the rule of law, even when wielded primarily by the ruling class, was a genuine historical achievement worth defending — that the constraints law placed on arbitrary power were real even when law's content was class-biased. This was not a popular position within Marxist historiography, which tended to see law as ideology all the way down, and Thompson's insistence on its partial autonomy distinguished his approach from those who reduced legal forms to class interest.\n\nThe 1980s brought his most visible public engagement. Protest and Survive (1980), written in response to the British government's nuclear civil defense pamphlet, was the founding document of the European Nuclear Disarmament movement — a movement that Thompson organized with the specific goal of transcending Cold War bloc loyalty, building connections between peace activists on both sides of the Iron Curtain. He traveled extensively in Eastern Europe, met dissidents, and argued for a Europe free from both American and Soviet nuclear weapons — a position that made him unpopular with both Cold War hawks and with those on the left who saw American disarmament as the only legitimate goal. He died in August 1993, two months before finishing a history of William Blake that he had been working on for years.
